Things you always wanted to know but never thought to ask

Helmets

Helmets are required for all Tiny Tots, Pre-CanPower and CanSkaters to level 3 (inclusive). Helmets should fit snugly and both the strap and helmet itself should be adjustable.  Hockey helmets are quired rather than a cycling helmet since it is designed to withstand repeated bumps and protect against penetration. Look for hockey helmets approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Skates

A selection of used skates are available for purchase by the Winchester Skating Club. Skates should fit properly, be comfortable, and provide adequate support. If you have any questions about skates (or any other equipment) please feel free to speak to one of the professional coaches for assistance.

Skate sharpening

Skates should be sharpened by a professional. The Winchester Skating Club has arranged for Vince Derochie to come to the Winchester Arena on a regular basis (approximately every 5 weeks) to sharpen skates.

Skating Attire

Selected skate wear is available in the Winchester Skating Club closet (Winchester arena). This lightly used attire is a great alternative for parents not wishing to buy a new costume, or for parents who are new to skating and do not want to invest in clothing. NOTE: Proper skating attire is highly recommended for all Advanced CanSkaters, Intermediates and Seniors. Jeans are not suitable attire since they do not keep skaters warm and they do not stretch.

Things to consider when purchasing skate wear:

  • Fit
  • Comfort level of child
  • Warmth (Obviously in the winter weather it is preferable to have sleeves!)
  • Suitability with solo music (please consult your coach for more information on this)
  • Appropriateness for skating (again, speak with your coach)

Please watch the Winchester Skating Club notice board in the lobby for updates and information regarding our programs.
